John was interviewed by Grand Designs to provide advice to those who are ‘Getting Started’ with their own Grand Design.

Q: What elements of the interior design should be considered when designing the exterior?

A: One of the most important things to consider is windows and the impact they have on the design of the interior spaces. The symmetry and balance of a room are important and this should be taken into account when designing the exterior. The outside of the building should work in terms of scale, proportion and balance, but not at the sacrifice of the interior spaces. With thought and consideration, both should work.

Q: What Modern Technologies must be designed into a future proof scheme?

A: LED lighting should be fitted in every home, as it saves time and money by using less energy. Get advice on the right fittings and lighting controls to use, as there are guidelines on colour, temperature beam widths and quality. Also, make sure that the power and wiring are available for audio-visual and security systems.
